MV Research : Detailed Research Into Chosen Artist :
The Royal Concept
The indie rock band were formed in 2010 in Sweden and currently have their same original 4 members
- David Larson - Vocalist and Lead Guitarist
- Filip Bekic - Guitarist
- Robert Magnus - Bassist
- Frans Povel - Drummer
Originally billed as The Concept, in 2010 they released their first single, "Damn", which has a mixture of sunny-pop and electronic elements. The following year they released "D-D-Dance" and "Gimme Twice". After getting support from the Swedish national radio channel P3, they soon made an impression on the Swedish live music scene, peaking in the summer of 2011 at the Peace & Love festival.
The band first came to my attention when they gained notoriety for performing their single 'Goldrushed' which released on the popular soundtrack of video game Fifa 13, receiving acclaim as one of the best songs on EA's soundtrack with competition from established artists such as Flo Rida, Wretch 32 and Kasabian.
In 2013, the band released the single "On Our Way", and announced the title of their debut album, Goldrushed, which was released in Sweden on September 11, 2013. That fall the band toured with American Authors and Misterwives around North America. In addition the band also released an exclusive song on Spotify, "27 Forever". In spring 2014 the band went on tour with Switchfoot. On April 2014, the band announced the release date (May 7, 2014) of their debut album "Goldrushed" in Japan, which features five bonus tracks (Damn, Naked & Dumb, Gimme Twice, Knocked Up, and Someday). Interviews
GIMME YOUR ANSWERS: AN INTERVIEW W/ THE ROYAL CONCEPT [2013]
AMBY: On Our Way is a contagious track. What’s the inspiration behind “we are young, we are one, let us shine for what it’s worth”?
The Royal Concept: It basically means that the spontaneous and unexpected will always win and it’s a worship to all people that dare to be different. We wrote On our Way after a night of clubbing at a hip, exclusive place in Stockholm called “The Prison”. You know, that kind of place where no one dares to be themselves. A place where people are so satisfied with just getting in and feeling exclusive that they forget to enjoy life more than they enjoy wearing expensive clothes. I feel terrible at a place like that, it’s really a prison. I’d rather wake up in the gutter the morning after than spend a night with knowing exactly what’s gonna happen. It’s the same with playing live. We’d much rather throw ourselves out there with the chance of falling heavily, than play it safe after a click track. The song is about leaving a place like “the Prison” for a person that you care so much more about.
AMBY: The Royal Concept EP was released last year. Which songs off of it are your favorite?
The Royal Concept: We’re very fond of two tracks: “Goldrushed” and “In the end”. In the end is still our indie-arena-anthem and Goldrushed captures that silly “we don’t care-vibe” that we’re childishly fond of. It’s The Strokes fault.
From this transcript of the interview I have established the kind of themes I intend to use for my music video of 'On our way' as I want to portray the kind of freedom and disregard that the band mention. Another theme is friendship which I want to include as the band are all close together and enjoy music whereas most modern artists only collaborate for financial benefit.
